ProSeries Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Electronically File an Amended Tax-Exempt Organization Return?

Products Affected:

  • ProSeries/990

Situation
How do I electronically file an amended tax-exempt organization return?
Solution

Note: If the original return or extension was paper filed, be sure to only check the box next to "Check this box to file amended return electronically" in Part VI of the 990-EZ, 990, 990-T and 990-PF Information Worksheet. Do NOT check the boxes for electronic filing of the return or extension.

Electronically Filing an Amended 2008 Tax-Exempt Organization Return

  1. Before you amend the original return, we recommend that you make a backup copy of the return you will be amending.  Note: do not use the Save As command.
  2. Open the originally filed return.
  3. On the 990-EZ, 990, 990-T and 990-PF Information Worksheet go to Part VI, Electronic Filing Information, and scroll down to the Electronic Filing of Amended Return section. Check the box next to "Check this box to file amended return electronically."
  4. On Form 990-EZ or Form 990, p1, check the box under item B to indicate an amended return. On Form 990-PF, p1, check the box under item G to indicate an amended return.
  5. Make the necessary changes to the federal return.
  6. Make sure the amended return passes Final Review.
  7. Save the return.
  8. When you're ready to e-file the amended return, go to the HomeBase EF Center.
  9. Attach required supporting statements in the form of PDF files.
  10. Convert and transmit the client's amended 2008 tax-exempt organization return the way that you converted and transmitted the client's non-amended 2008 tax-exempt organization return.
  11. Check for acknowledgments the way that you checked for acknowledgments for non-amended returns.

Note: Form 990-T is not able to be electronically filed with ProSeries.  Follow the standard mailing process to file the tax return by mail.  To correct errors or change a previously filed return, write "Amended Return" at the top of the return.  Also, include a statement that indicates the line number(s) on the original return that was changed and give the reason for each change.  Refer to 2008 Instructions for Form 990-T for more information.
