Situation
When attempting to electronically file a Registered Domestic Partnership (RDP) return the status "Return Duplicate SSN/DCN" displays in the status column of the HomeBase EF Center view or EF Clients tab. You are unable to electronically file the return with this error.
Reminder: If Electronically Filing a Second State; You Must Wait Until You Have Received the Acknowledgement from the Previously Filed Federal Return Before Being Able To Transmit.
Workaround
Create the married filing jointly (MFJ) federal return and state return:
-
Create the MFJ return, be sure to use the TSJ indicators.
-
On the Federal Information Worksheet, scroll down to Part IV - Additional Federal Return Information. Under the Partners in a Registered Domestic Partnership, Civil Union, or Same-Sex Marriage section, check the Taxpayer in a Registered Domestic Partnership, civil union, or same-sex marriage box. Also, check the This is taxpayer's joint return for filing joint state return only box.
-
At this time, do NOT check the File state return electronically box, in Part VI - Electronic Filing of Tax Return Information, of the Federal Information Worksheet.
-
Go to the state return and complete the state return.
-
Save this return in the HomeBase Form 1040: Individual view or 1040 tab.
Create two separate federal returns for these partners:
-
Open the MFJ return created above. Go to the File menu and choose Split MFJ Return.
-
If prompted to save the return, click Yes. When the Split MFJ Return dialog box appears, click OK. When the MFJ Split Log dialog box appears, click Close. You can click Print Log if you want to printout the log. Note: The log shows that it created a return for taxpayer and spouse. Both are filing as single taxpayers in the federal returns.
-
Open one of the separate federal only returns.
-
On the Federal Information Worksheet, scroll to Part VI - Electronic Filing of Tax Return Information, and check the File federal return electronically box. Save and close the return.
-
Open the other separate federal only return and repeat step four.
-
Go to the HomeBase EF Center view or EF Clients tab and transmit both federal only returns.
-
Open the federal only return that is for the primary taxpayer and uncheck the File federal return electronically box. Save and close the return.
-
Go to the HomeBase Form 1040: Individual view and open the original MFJ return you created. Now check the File state return electronically box, in Part VI - Electronic Filing of Tax Return Information, of the Federal Information Worksheet.
-
Go to the state return. Save and close the return.
-
The state return should now be in the HomeBase EF Center view or EF Clients tab and you should now be able to transmit the state return.
-
Open the federal only return that is for the primary taxpayer and check the File federal return electronically box. Save and close the return. This return should now display in the HomeBase EF Center view or EF Clients tab.
