Situation
Can I determine if my computer meets the minimum system requirements before installing the ProSeries software?
Solution
To check your computer's configuration before installing the ProSeries 2009 software, you can use your Microsoft Windows operating system.
Operating System, Speed, and Memory
To check your computer operating system, speed, and memory:
- Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Properties. This opens the System Properties dialog box to the General tab.
- The computer operating system and service pack information is listed in the upper part of this dialog box.
- The computer processor type, speed and memory is listed in the lower portion
- The processor type and speed may be listed in the format of Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4M CPU 2.00GHz. This is a Pentium 4 processor with a speed of two gigahertz. (1 GHz = 1,000 MHz)
- If the processor type and speed is listed in the format of x86 Family 6 Model 8, you will need to refer to the manufacturer's documentation to determine the processor and speed.
- The memory may be listed in the format of 785,776 KB RAM. This is equivalent to 768 MB RAM as 1024 KB = 1 MB. 261,552 KB are equivalent to 256 MB.
Hard Drive Space
To check your available hard drive space:
- Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
- Right-click the C: Drive and select Properties. This opens the Local Disk Properties dialog box.
- The Free Space is listed here in both bytes and gigabytes (GB). 1,024 MB = 1 GB
Monitor Resolution
To check you monitor's screen resolution:
- Right-click on an empty area of your desktop and select Properties. This opens the Display Properties dialog box.
- Click the Settings tab. The section for Screen area is the screen resolution.
- Adjust the resolution by moving the slider and clicking Apply. Read the next dialog box and click OK. To keep this setting, click Yes in the next dialog box. To return to the original setting, click No or let the timer run out.
Printers
The minimum requirement is an HP LaserJet or PCL compatible printer with 2MB of printer memory. If the technical specifications for your printer do not list HP compatibility information, you should look for a laser printer that uses PCL, version 5 or higher, for Windows.
When ProSeries sends printing instructions to the printer, PCL (Printer Control Language) is used to interpret the instructions so the printer can fully understand them. PCL is part of the printer driver, software your computer uses to communicate with the printer.
Check the specifications for your printer to see if it uses PCL. You may find that you need to use a different printer driver to get PCL.
Printer manufacturers often publish technical specifications on their Web sites. Type the brand name of your printer into a search engine to find the manufacturer's Web site. On the manufacturer's Web site look for product information or technical specification for your printer model.
Printer drivers are also available for download on manufacturers' Web sites. You should use the most up-to-date PCL printer driver available for your printer and computer operating system.
Inkjet printers are not recommended and GDI printers are not supported.
Internet Browser
The minimum requirement is Internet Explorer 6.0. To check the version of your browser, in an open Internet Explorer window, go to the Help menu and select About Internet Explorer.
Note: During installation ProSeries will check your computer system to see if it meets the minimum requirements for:
