Federal Form W-2 Worksheet Error About Indiana Withholding

Situation
The following error message is displayed on the federal W-2 Worksheet when a return is marked for Indiana electronic filing and an amount more than 8% of the Indiana wages is entered in Box 17.  

"Box 17-1 is invalid for Electronic Filing. The Indiana withholding cannot be more than 8 percent of your Indiana wages. Please verify the correct amounts of wages and withholding has been entered."

Indiana withholding can be up to 20%.


Solution
This situation was corrected in a recent Federal 1040 update. Download and install the update if you have not already done so. (Go to the Update menu and select Update Installed Products.)
 
Workaround (prior to update)
  1. Complete the federal and state return.
  2. Run Final Review in the federal and state return.
  3. Correct all federal and state errors except this error and save the return.
  4. Go to the EF Center or EF Clients tab and highlight the return.
  5. Go to the E-File menu, point to Electronic Filing, and select Convert/Transmit Returns and Extensions.
  6. In the Electronic Filing Options dialog box, select Convert and Transmit selected returns/extensions.
  7. Uncheck the box for Enable conversion error checking and click OK.
