ProSeries Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Electronically File an Amended Corporation Return?

Products Affected:

  • ProSeries/1120

Situation

How do I electronically file an amended federal 1120 return?

Solution

Important Notes

  • On November 25, 2008 the IRS issued revised instructions for Amended and Superseding Corporate Returns.
  • Amended corporation returns prior to tax year 2006 cannot be filed electronically using ProSeries software.
  • Amended Form 1120-H returns cannot be filed electronically using ProSeries software.
  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal (direct debt) for additional balance due is not available for amended returns.
  • To mark an electronically filed return as "Amended Return Mode" you must have the accepted acknowledgment for the originally filed return.
  • If the original return or extension was paper filed, be sure to only check the box next to "Check this box to file amended return electronically" in Part V of the Corporation Information Worksheet. Do NOT check the boxes for electronic filing of the return or extension.

Electronically Filing Amended 2008 Corporation Returns

  1. Before you amend the original return, we recommend that you make a backup copy of the return you will be amending. Note: do not use Save As function.
  2. Open the originally filed return.
  3. On the Corporation Information Worksheet go to Part V, Electronic Filing Information, and scroll down to the Electronic Filing of Amended Return section. Check the box next to "Check this box to file amended return electronically."
  4. Open Form 1120X.
  5. In the Amended Return Smart Worksheet, check box A. This freezes the amounts in column A. If you do not have a state return attached, skip to step 9.
  6. If you have a state return attached, go to the state and select the state amended form.
  7. If necessary, review the Tax Help instructions to determine how to amend the state return. (In most cases, you must check a box to freeze the original state amounts. A column will then show the amounts that were originally reported on the state's main form.)
  8. If you went to the state return, go back to the federal return.
  9. Open Form 1120 and other forms and worksheets and make the necessary changes.
  10. Open Form 1120X. Column C will show the results of the changes you made. Be sure to explain the reason the return is being amended in Part II of Form 1120X. The explanation you enter in Part II of Form 1120X is transmitted to the IRS with your electronic return. Form 1120X is not transmitted to the IRS electronically, but you may attach a PDF copy of the completed Form 1120X to the amended return. Attachments that were transmitted with the original federal return are NOT transmitted with the amended return. You must attach any applicable attachments to the amended return. If you do not have a state attached, skip to step 13.
  11. If you have a state return attached, go to the state return and make any necessary state changes. Open the amended state form. The changes will show in the Corrected Amount column. Note: The amended state return is NOT transmitted with the amended federal return. The amended state return cannot be filed electronically, it needs to be mailed to the state taxing authority.
  12. If you went to the state return, go back to the federal return.
  13. Make sure the amended return passes Final Review.
  14. Save the return.
  15. When you're ready to e-file the amended return, go to the HomeBase EF Center.
  16. Convert and transmit the client's amended 2008 corporation return the way that you converted and transmitted the client's non-amended 2008 corporation return.
  17. Check for acknowledgments the way that you checked for acknowledgments for non-amended returns.
