ProSeries Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register with the IRS to participate in electronic filing?

Products Affected:

  • ProSeries
  • ProSeries Basic Edition

Situation

How do I register with the IRS to participate in electronic filing? How do I apply for an EFIN?

Solution

All ProSeries users must have an Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) to electronically file tax returns. To receive an EFIN from the IRS, you must register by completing Form 8633, Application to Participate in the IRS e-file Program. This application should be completed at least 45 days before you want to start electronically filing returns.

The IRS prefers that you submit the enrollment information through e-Services on the IRS Web site.

If you must register with the IRS by completing a paper enrollment application, download Form 8633 from the IRS Web site.

If you were previously accepted to participate in IRS e-file, you must keep your enrollment information up to date. Updates to your business address, telephone numbers, or other contact information can be made via the IRS e-Services.

Note: You will need to update your enrollment application to electronically file federal corporation, S corporation, partnership, or tax-exempt organization returns if your original enrollment did not specify these types of returns were to be filed.
