ProSeries Frequently Asked Questions

How do I amend a tax-exempt organization return?

Products Affected:

ProSeries/990

Situation

How do I amend a 990 tax-exempt or non-profit return?

Solution

Forms 990-EZ, 990, 990-T, and 990-PF

  1. Open the originally filed return.
  2. From the File menu, select Save As. Save the return with a new name such as ClieX1234amend.07n. This keeps the original file intact.
  3. On Form 990-EZ or Form 990, p1, check the box under item B to indicate an amended return. On Form 990-PF, p1, check the box under item G to indicate an amended return. On Form 990-T, write Amended Return at the top.
  4. Make the necessary changes to the return. The amended return must provide all the information required by the form and instructions, not just the new or corrected information.
  5. For Form 990-T, include a statement that indicates the line numbers on the original return that were changed and give the reason for each change.
  6. Save and print the return. The completed return should be mailed to the service center where the original return was filed.
