With the ProSeries software, you can use client-level passwords to protect client data. You also can require that preparers enter an Electronic Filing password before electronically transmitting returns or extension forms. If you want to use client-level passwords or an Electronic Filing password, you must enter a Master password first. The Master password can generally be used in place of a client-level password or the Electronic Filing password.
Note: If you have Access Rights enabled, use an Access Rights Administrator password in place of the client-level or electronic filing password. Do not use the Master password for this purpose.
How do I create or change a Master password or Electronic Filing password?
- Go to the Tools menu and select Options.
- On the left, select Passwords.
- Enter or change your Master password in the Master Password area.
- Enter or change your Electronic Filing password in the Electronic Filing Transmission Password area.
Note: In order to make changes to a password, you will need to enter the existing password to demonstrate that you are authorized to make these changes.
- Click OK.
How do I create a client-level password?
You can set up a client-level password when saving your return.
- Go to the File menu and select Save As.
- A dialog box will appear asking you for the client file name with a field for an optional password. Enter your password in this field and click Save to create the password.
- A confirmation box will ask you to re-enter your password.
Note: You must set up a Master password before you can create client-level passwords.
How do I delete an existing Master password or Electronic Filing password?
To delete your Master password or Electronic Filing password, follow the steps above to access the Passwords screen. Enter the existing password in the first field, and leave the second and third fields blank.
What do I do if I forget my Electronic Filing or client-level passwords?
The Master password can generally be used in place of a client-level password or the Electronic Filing password. If you have Access Rights enabled, use an Access Rights Administrator password in place of the client-level or electronic filing password. Do not use the Master password for this purpose.
