Products Affected:

  • ProSeries
  • ProSeries Basic Edition

Situation

How do I amend an individual return or change information in a previously filed federal or state return?

Solution

Form 1040X is included in the ProSeries federal individual software. The software works by bringing the current figures into Form 1040X and "freezing" the figures in Column A of the form. We recommend that you read through the steps for the amended return you wish to file. Choose from the following directions:

To amend a 2008 federal tax return:

Note: Before you change the federal return, review the instructions to amend the state return. In many cases you need to mark the state return as amended before you change the federal return.

  1. Select and open the return that you want to amend. Using the Save As command, save the return under a new name (for example, CLIENTX.08i). This keeps the original file intact.
  2. If this return was electronically filed, uncheck the checkboxes for electronic filing on the Federal Information Worksheet.
  3. Open Form 1040X. To do this press the F6 key and then the X key to highlight Form 1040X. Then press Enter.
  4. Enter 2008 in the calendar year field. This activates the form, and the figures flow from the 1040 to the appropriate fields in the 1040X. The figures "freeze" in Column A and Column C reflects what is currently on the return.
  5. IMPORTANT: If you are also amending a state return, activate the amended state return form BEFORE making changes to the federal return:
    1. Go to the state return and select the amended form.
    2. Enter 2008 in the calendar year field or enter an X in the appropriate check box (review the Tax Help instructions for your state). The Original Amount column shows the amounts that were originally reported on the state's main form already filed.
    3. Go back to the federal return.

  6. Go directly to the forms and schedules that you need to correct. You can add forms, add copies of forms, remove forms, etc. as you would to amend a return. Note: Changes in dependency and filing status must be entered on the Federal Information Worksheet. Column C shows the results of the changes you made on the Form 1040.
  7. Return to Form 1040X. Columns B and C automatically recalculate on the 1040X to reflect the changes you made to this clients return.

To amend a return filed for a previous tax year:

  1. Enter the correct calendar or fiscal year on the 1040X.
  2. Enter the amounts originally reported for the chosen year in Column A.
  3. Enter the net changes in Column B or the correct amounts in Column C.
  4. The program automatically completes either Column C or Column B.

To amend a previously amended return:

  1. Open the previously amended return.
  2. Using the Save As command, save the return under a new name (e.g., Client_AmendedX.08i).
  3. Open Form 1040X. To do this press the F6 key and then the X key to highlight Form 1040X. Then press Enter.
  4. Remove this copy of Form 1040X so that you can create a new copy. From the Forms menu, select Remove Form 1040X and then click Yes.
  5. Open Form 1040X and enter 2008 in the calendar year field. This activates the form, and the figures flow from the 1040 to the appropriate fields in the 1040X. The figures "freeze" in Column A and Column C reflects what is currently on the return.
  6. Go directly to the forms and schedules that you need to correct. You can add forms, add copies of forms, remove forms, etc. as you would to amend a return.
  7. Return to Form 1040X. Columns B and C automatically recalculate on the 1040X to reflect the changes you made to this clients return.
