  • IRS Issues Draft Instructions for 2008 Form 990
On April 15, 2008, the IRS issued News Release IR-2008-60, releasing for public comment the draft instructions to the 2008 Form 990, which is the return most tax-exempt organizations must file annually. The instructions apply to the redesigned Form 990 that organizations will file for their 2008 tax years (returns filed in 2009). The final version of the redesigned Form 990 was unveiled in December 2007 (IRS news release IR-2007-204). For more information, please visit the IRS Web site.

State Taxes and State Electronic Filing
New York Individual
  • New York Amended Returns
On April 18, 2008, the New York State Department of Taxation notified us that they are seeing many amended returns in production that are incomplete filings and are being sent back to the taxpayer with a notification telling them that the amended return could not be processed because of missing forms. Taxpayers are asked to send the amended return back with all the correct attachments. The most often missing form is the IT-2, followed by missing credit forms where the taxpayer is claiming the credit but not attaching the credit form. Perhaps taxpayers think that if the form was unchanged from the original filing, there is no need to resend, which is not the case.

The New York State Department of Taxation notification rate is very high, currently at 85%, most of these were completed by paid preparers. They will be issuing an electronic subscription notice, but they wanted us to send out a reminder to ProSeries users that the entire return must be printed and mailed to the New York State Department of Taxation for processing.
