Situation

A taxpayer receives a letter about a 2005 Form 1040 return indicating that the vehicle expenses claimed were reduced due to the Form 4562, Section B information not supporting the amounts claimed in the return.

If the following are true, the return may be impacted by this issue.

  1. The return was filed electronically through 2005 ProSeries, ProSeries Express Edition, or ProSeries Basic Edition.
  2. The return contains at least one car and truck worksheet with values entered on line 5(b). (Car and truck worksheets with a value on line 5(a) but not 5(b) will not be impacted by this issue).
  3. Form 4562 is required to be filed with the return.

If all the above are true, the electronic Form 4562, line 30 will incorrectly be reporting the value from line 5(a) of the car and truck worksheet and will not include any amount on line 5(b). Note: This issue occurs only in the electronic return and does not exist in the paper return. The on screen display of Form 4562 will show the correct value on line 30.

Solution

Should a taxpayer be contacted by the IRS due to the business miles/business use not supporting the vehicle expense deduction claimed, printed copies of Form 4562 may be provided to support the original return.
