Situation

Arizona Governor Napolitano signs Senate Bill 1157 extending the filing deadline to April 17th and other provisions.

The bill also accepts the federal treatment of educator expenses, higher education tuition and fees, and state and local sales tax. For more information, visit the Arizona Department of Revenue Web site.

Solution

This situation is corrected in the Arizona Individual update that became available online on May 23, 2007. Download and install this update, if you have not already done so. (Go to the Update menu and select Update Installed Products.)

Please view the Arizona Individual ReadMe for important information on how to activate the updated calculations.

Workaround (prior to update)

As a result of this bill, Arizona Individual returns will need adjustments if the educator expense, higher education tuition and fees, or state and local sales tax were deducted. Please be aware of the following issues in the ProSeries Arizona Individual software:

Form 140, Resident Personal Income Tax Return

Open the Other Additions to Income Statement (140), on line N delete each amount and description, if any, for the following descriptions: educator expenses, tuition and fees deduction, IRA qualified charitable distribution, and IRA deduction due to nontaxable combat wages.

Open Schedule A(140): Itemized Deductions, and verify that the amount on line 14 does not include any amount of IRA qualified charitable distribution (enter the correct amount, if applicable). If there is an amount on line 15B, Amount of disallowed federal sales tax deduction, change the amount to zero.

Form 140NR, Nonresident Personal Income Tax Return

Open Form 140NR, scroll down to lines A, B, C, and D (above line B13), and change each amount, if any, to zero.

Open Schedule A(NR): Itemized Deductions for Nonresidents. If there is an amount on line B, Amount of disallowed federal sales tax deduction, change the amount to zero.

Form 140PY, Part-Year Personal Income Tax Return

Open Form 140PY, scroll down to lines A, B, C, and D (above line B17), and change each amount, if any, to zero.

Open Schedule A(PY): Itemized Deductions for Part-Year Residents, or Schedule A(PYN): Itemized Deductions for Part-Year Nonresidents, whichever is active. If there is an amount on line B, Amount of disallowed federal sales tax deduction, change the amount to zero.

Note: If the Arizona return has already been filed, an amended return will need to be filed.
