On the Form W-2 Worksheet, box 16, why doesn’t an amount calculate for state wages when I have the automatically calculate box checked?

If there is more than one state selected in Part X of the Federal Information Worksheet, the state wages will not automatically calculate. On the Form W-2 Worksheet you must enter the state name in box 15, state wages in box 16, and state income tax in box 17.

What do I do if my client's Form W-2 has a code in box 14 that is not on the box 14 drop down list of the Form W-2 Worksheet in ProSeries?

Most entries in box 14 of Form W-2 are for information purposes only. Employers can enter any information they deem necessary in box 14 of Form W-2 and there are no standards for these items. ProSeries supports codes for some box 14 items. Most box 14 items do not flow any where in the program, however some items entered in box 14 are used by federal or state returns. The box 14 codes in ProSeries may not be the same codes that are used by every employer. Refer to the Tax Help in the program for an explanation of the box 14 codes in ProSeries.

My client has a Form W-2 with nontaxable combat pay in box 12 and no wages in box 1. Why do I get an error message that this return cannot be electronically filed because box 1 must have wages of $1 or more?

To electronically file a return that contains a Form W-2 Worksheet with code Q - nontaxable combat pay in box 12 and no wages in box 1, check the active duty military pay box on line 13b of the Form W-2 Worksheet. Open the Electronic Filing Information Worksheet, scroll down to the Miscellaneous Electronic Filing Items section, and check the box for the appropriate combat duty or qualified hazardous duty area. You should now be able to electronically file the return.
