Why is the amount on Form 1040, line 15b different from Form 1099-R, box 2a?

The taxable amount of an IRA distribution that should appear on line 15b on Form 1040 or line 11b on Form 1040A may be different from the amount that is shown in box 2a on Form 1099-R for one of the following reasons:

  1. The taxpayer has a basis in an IRA because he made contributions to an IRA in the past that he was not able to deduct. The IRA basis will appear on the last Form 8606, Nondeductible IRAs, the taxpayer filed. If ProSeries was used to prepare the taxpayer's return in prior years and you transfer the return, the IRA basis will carry forward from year to year and will appear on the IRA Information Worksheet, Part III, line 12. If an IRA basis exists, the program will calculate the taxable amount of the IRA distribution on Form 8606 using the basis of the IRAs and the year end value of the IRAs.
  2. The taxpayer made a rollover of part or all of an IRA distribution. In this instance the word "Rollover" will appear to the left of line 15b on Form 1040 or line 11b on Form 1040A.
  3. The taxpayer has a Roth IRA distribution and the taxable amount depends on if the distribution is a qualified Roth distribution or a nonqualified Roth distribution.
