State Only Return Fails Conversion for Electronic Filing With PIN Error

Products Affected:

Print

Situation

When a state only return is marked for electronic filing and the federal return is not marked for electronic filing, the error "<state> Individual: The tax return contains missing Practitioner PIN information. The self select PIN information must be complete before electronically filing." will appear when converting and transmitting the state return.

Solution

This situation is corrected in the Federal 1040 update that became available online on March 5, 2007.

Download and install this update, if you have not already done so. (Go to the Update menu and select Update Installed Products.)

Workaround (prior to update)

  1. Open the return and go to the Federal Information Worksheet.
  2. Uncheck the box for Sign return electronically using Practitioner PIN.
  3. Open and save the state return.
  4. Return to the EF Center or EF Clients tab and select only the state return.
  5. Convert, or convert and transmit the return for electronic filing. The error will not appear and the conversion should be successful.

Although the federal return is not marked for electronic filing and the PIN cannot be used as a signature method on the federal return, ProSeries is detecting the Practitioner PIN check box and indicating that the PIN information is missing. Unchecking the box to use the PIN on the federal return will prevent the error when converting the state return.
