Electronic Filing Error Reject Code 0486 for Adoption Credit

Situation

When you attempt to electronically file a return with an adoption that was not finalized in 2006, you receive the following reject.

"Error Code 0486: When Form 1040/1040A, Adoption Credit (Form 1040-Line 53)(Form 1040A-Line 34) has an amount, Form 8839 must be part of return. When Adoption Literal (Lin 7) equals 'AB', 'SNE', or 'PYAB', Adoption Amount must be significant and page 2 of the first occurrence of Form 8839 must be present."

Solution

This situation will be corrected in the Federal 1040 update anticipated to be available online on or about February 21, 2007.

Download and install this update when it becomes available. (Go to the Update menu and select Update Installed Products.)

Workaround (prior to update)

1. Open Form 1040, override the checkbox on line 54b, and uncheck the box.
2. Click OK on the error alert box and save the return.
3. Run Final Review or Check for Errors. Correct all errors except for the error regarding the override on box 54b.
4. Disable conversion error checking when converting/transmitting the return. (In the Electronic Filing Options dialog box, uncheck the Enable conversion error checking box and click OK.)
