Tip: Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions

Products Affected:

Print

In prior years, the ProSeries software had issues with the synchronization of noncash charitable contributions when some were entered on Schedule A and others were entered directly on Form 8283 in the same tax return.

For example: This situation could occur when you entered a few on Schedule A not realizing that the final total was going to exceed $500, thus requiring all to be on Form 8283.

In the 2006 ProSeries software, data input of noncash charitable contributions has been improved to make this more efficient. To enter noncash charitable contributions in the 2006 ProSeries software, follow these steps:

  1. Open Schedule A, scroll down to the Noncash Contributions Smart Worksheet and enter the charity names and amounts.
  2. When the total amount of ALL noncash contributions is greater than $500, you can enter additional information needed for Form 8283 while on Schedule A. Enter the name of the charity in the Noncash Contributions Smart Worksheet, then double-click on the charity name to open the Noncash Contributions Worksheet. Complete the Noncash Contributions Worksheet. (This step ONLY needs to be done if the total of ALL items is greater than $500.)
  3. If you want to return to Schedule A, click the QuickZoom button at the top of the page.
  4. The program will automatically create Form 8283 when required.
