Form 1040 Error: ITIN Is Not in a Valid Range

Situation

When you enter some individual taxpayer identification numbers (ITINs), you receive the error message: "... SSN is not in a valid range. The social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) must be in a valid range and all digits must be numeric."

The IRS updated the range of valid ITINs. ITINs from 999-81-9999 to 999-88-9999 will incorrectly be treated as invalid by the ProSeries software.

Solution

This situation will be corrected in the Form 1040 update anticipated to be available online on or about January 29, 2007. Download and install this update when it becomes available. (From the Update menu, choose Update Installed Products.)
