An electronically filed extension, Form 4868, can be filed with the amount due paid by electronic funds withdrawal (EFW), also known as direct debit. If the amount due is to be paid by EFW, the return must be filed using a Practitioner PIN.
In order to pay the Form 4868 balance due by EFW:
- In Part VII of the Federal Information Worksheet, check the box "File Form 4868 (application for extension of time to file return) electronically."
- In Part VIII of the Federal Information Worksheet, for "Use electronic funds withdrawal of Form 4868 balance due" check the Yes box.
- In Part VIII, verify the transferred information or enter the name of the financial institution, check the box for the type of account, and enter the routing and account numbers.
- In Part VIII, click the first QuickZoom button to QuickZoom to the Form 4868 Electronic Filing Worksheet.
- On the Form 4868 Electronic Filing Worksheet, complete the Electronic Funds Withdrawal - Amount paid with Form 4868 section by entering the payment date. (The payment date should not be later than the filing deadline.) The amount you are paying flows from Form 4868, line 7.
- Complete the Practitioner PIN Information for Form 4868 section. You cannot file an extension using EFW unless the return is filed using the Practitioner PIN.
Note: There are two places to enter the taxpayer Practitioner PIN information in the program, on the EF Info Worksheet and on the 4868 EF Wks. The PIN information for the extension must be entered on the 4868 EF Wks.
Note: If the extension is electronically filed and rejected, and the extension is changed to pay by check and re-filed, then the check may be considered late by the IRS if it is mailed after the filing deadline. This will be up to the discretion of the IRS. However, as an attempt to prove the extension was timely filed, the taxpayer may submit the Intuit Postmark Report.
