ProSeries Frequently Asked Questions

How do I electronically file an individual return after electronically filing an extension?

Products Affected:

Print

We recommend that you wait until the extension acknowledgment is received before electronically filing the completed return.

If the Extension is Accepted

The program automatically checks the Form 4868 accepted box on the Form 4868 Electronic Filing Worksheet. The return is automatically switched from Extension Mode to Return Mode and you can now electronically file the completed return.

If the Extension is Rejected or You Do Not Want to Wait for the Acknowledgment

  1. Open the Form 4868 Electronic Filing Worksheet.
  2. At the top of the Form 4868 Electronic Filing Worksheet, check the box for Form 4868 accepted. This switches the return from Extension Mode to Return Mode.
  3. The completed return can now be filed electronically. If the extension acknowledgment is still pending when the return is transmitted, it will be received when it becomes available.
Note: A record of the rejected acknowledgment will be retained by the program.

If the Extension is Accidentally Electronically Filed

You should wait until the extension acknowledgment is received. If the extension is accepted, you should follow the payment instructions for the extension and file the completed return. If the extension is rejected, you can file the completed return and pay the amount due as you normally would.
