ProSeries Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if a PIN is used in an electronically filed return?

Products Affected:

Print

How you determine if a PIN is used varies by the return's status. Returns accepted by the IRS differ from returns that haven't been transmitted.

IRS Accepted Returns

How to tell if the IRS accepted an electronically filed return with a PIN.

Acknowledgments If an acknowledgment was automatically picked up at the end of a transmission, the Transmission log will show Accepted with PIN.

If an acknowledgment was received by using Receive Acknowledgments or Update Selected Acknowledgments, the Acknowledgments log will show Accepted with PIN.
Form 9325 Form 9325, box 2a will be automatically checked when an Accepted with PIN acknowledgment is received through the ProSeries program.

Returns not Transmitted

There are two ways an ERO can confirm a PIN has been properly selected before the return is transmitted to the IRS.

EF Center or EF Clients In the EF Center or EF Clients tab, scroll to the right to the PIN column. A Y in this column indicates the PIN is active in this return.
Electronic Filing Instructions The form Electronic Filing Instructions (or EF Instructions), listed towards the end of the forms list in ProSeries, will indicate whether your client needs to complete Form 8879, used with the PIN, or Form 8453.
