How do I copy or backup my client files using ProSeries?
Products Affected: |
|
- ProSeries
- ProSeries Express Edition
- ProSeries Basic Edition
- ProSeries/Client Organizer
To copy or backup your ProSeries client files using the ProSeries program, follow these steps:
- Go to HomeBase and select the appropriate view or tab.
- Select the client files you want to copy or backup.
- Go to the File menu, choose Client File Maintenance, then choose Copy/Backup.
- In the Copy/Backup Client Files dialog box, click the Set target directory button.
- In the Browse for Folder dialog box, select the appropriate target directory, then click OK. Do NOT use the root directory or the ProSeries data directory. (The default target directory is the directory to which you most recently backed up client files.)
- Click the Backup Client(s) button to backup your selected client data files to the target directory.
Notes
- Floppy Disk - If you are backing up to a floppy disk, keep in mind that a floppy disk can only hold a limited number of returns. A large return can fill a floppy disk. We recommend you copy or backup ProSeries files to a directory on the floppy disk and not to the root directory.
- CD - You may not be able to use the ProSeries copy/backup command to copy or burn files directly to some CDs. If you want to backup your files to a CD, but are unable to do so using ProSeries, we recommend you use ProSeries to copy/backup the files to another directory on the hard drive. Then use your media software to copy or burn the files from this directory to a directory on the CD. Note: If you were able to copy/backup to formatted CDs, but were unable to do so in early versions of 2006 ProSeries this situation was corrected in an update that became available online on March 5, 2007.
- Zip Drive or Flash Drive - We recommend you copy or backup ProSeries files to a directory on the drive. Do not copy or burn the files to the root directory on your zip drive or flash drive as there is a limit to the number of files and folders that can be stored on the root directory.
- Multiple Data Folders - If you store your ProSeries client files in multiple folders, set the client data file directory for one directory at a time. You will need to repeat the copy/backup command separately for each different directory.
Important Information for PPR Users - If you copy or backup ProSeries client files using Windows Explorer or your media software, PPR information is not retained. PPR information is only retained if you use the ProSeries Copy/Backup command.
If you use the ProSeries Copy/Backup command to backup client files, you must use the ProSeries Restore command to restore the backup copies of those files before you can open them in ProSeries.
ProSeries does not support moving or copying the ProSeries program to a new computer. You need to install the ProSeries software on the new computer and then use the backup and restore commands to move your client files to the new computer.
