ProSeries Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out where information on a line is coming from?

When the program calculates a field using data from other forms, you can use the cross-reference feature to see how that field is calculated:

  1. Open a tax return. (You must be using Forms Mode, not QuickEntry Mode.)
  2. Go to a field that contains data calculated by the program. (Calculated data appears in black, and "QuickZoom" or "Calculated Value" appears on the status bar at the bottom of the ProSeries window. If you do not see anything in the status bar, go to the View menu and select Status Bar. )
  3. Right-click on the field, then select Cross-Reference from the pop-up menu that appears. (If this selection is grayed out, the data for this line is probably calculated based on information from the open form.)
  4. In the Help Center dialog box, the cross-reference information may contain hyperlinks (blue, underlined text). Click the hyperlink to go to the source of that information. If further assistance is available, the Tax Help and Government Instruction buttons will appear at the bottom of the Help Center dialog box.

Note: To go directly to the source of a calculated field, select QuickZoom instead of Cross-Reference in step three. Or, click the QuickZoom button (magnifying glass) next to the calculated field. To return to the calculated field, press Ctrl and Tab in ProSeries or use the arrow buttons in ProSeries Express and ProSeries Basic.
