State Tax Filing Deadline Extended for Storm Victims

Several states have announced that they will follow the IRS filing deadline for those taxpayers that were impacted by the April 16th storm. The filing deadline for these taxpayers has been extended to midnight, Thursday, April 26, 2007, unless otherwise noted. At the time of this article, the following states had announced that they will follow the IRS filing deadline for storm victims:

• California
• Connecticut
• District of Columbia (until April 19)
• Kansas
• Maine
• Maryland
• Massachusetts
• Nebraska
• New Hampshire (until April 19)
• New Jersey
• New York - New York is further extending the deadline to June 25 for filing state tax returns and tax payments for people directly affected by the disaster in Westchester, Rockland and Orange counties. Affected taxpayers should write April Storm on the top center of the front page of any paper return filed. In addition, personal income tax filers should enter special condition code 99. To do this in ProSeries, go to the New York State Information worksheet, Part XI - Other Information for Your Tax Return (Continued), and enter 99 on the line below the checkbox for Code 04.
