Doing a certain amount of regular maintenance on your hard disk drive will improve the performance of your ProSeries software. Note: Perform the following system maintenance only if you understand the instructions provided. If in doubt, contact a local computer professional to do this on all of your computers at least twice during tax season.
Create more disk space (do at least twice a year in March and November)
Disk Cleanup is a Windows utility that helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.
Use Disk Cleanup to:
Start the disk cleanup process by closing all of your programs and screen
savers. Then click the link below for operating system specific instructions.
Defragment your hard drive (do monthly)
When you delete files or uninstall programs, gaps are created on your hard disk drive. When you save files or install programs, files are actually fractured and stored in non-sequential areas of the drive. This causes the computer to take more time to find and reassemble the files for use. Use the Windows Disk Defragmenter utility to reorganize your hard disk drive to improve this situation.
Note: After using Disk Defragmenter, you will still save your client files, etc. to the same location, such as C:\ProWin06\06Data. Disk Defragmenter works with the internal information that tells the computer where \ProWin06\06Data is located on the hard drive.
