What form is used for extension of a business tax return?

This year Form 7004 (Rev. Dec. 2005), Application for Automatic 6-Month Extension of Time to File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns, is used to apply for an automatic six-month extension for all return types shown on Form 7004 with a tax year which ends on or after December 31, 2005.

Form 7004 replaces the following forms:

Form 2758, Application for Extension of Time to File Certain Excise, Income, Information, and Other Returns
Form 8736, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Return for a Partnership, REMIC, or for Certain Trusts
Form 8800, Application for Additional Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Return for a Partnership, REMIC, or for Certain Trusts

The IRS will no longer be sending notifications that your extension has been approved. They will notify you only if your extension is not allowed.

Note: Using ProSeries or ProSeries Express Edition, Form 7004 can be filed electronically for federal corporation and S corporation returns. Form 7004 cannot be filed electronically for federal partnership and fiduciary returns, it must be paper filed.
